Inspiration: Fluidity of Form in Nature

Inspiration: Fluidity of Form in Nature

As an artist, one of my main inspirations is the unexpected fluidity of form in nature. Form in flow will create a brief moment of spontaneous beauty, whether in the form itself, or in the secret whirls and crevices caught for just an instant. This captured energy of movement in objects, both in motion and in stillness, is all around us in the natural world.

This undulating life force both obvious and subtle is very exciting to me, and something I strive to convey in my work. As in nature, I work by letting the forms emerge from the seeds of an idea into tender shoots and pliant stalks. I sculpt in space with strips of wax similar to the linear curves in nature, exploring beauty moments that appear and disappear in my hands. Fluid twists, turns, curves, and curls emerge, and I look for the form beyond the form, the negative spaces that help shape the story of a piece.

Once I have found the thread of the story, I will push the form further to explore how it makes me FEEL. I am searching for expressiveness, expansiveness, freedom, power, and joy. Only then can the story be told. It is a dance of intention and spontaneity, of form and feeling. And just as in the natural world, it will only appear if you are paying attention.

Walking in nature is my sketchbook. My friends and family are used to me lagging behind because I am taking pictures like these that plant the seeds for the stories I may create with my sculptural jewelry someday.

What about you? When you are in nature, what excites your eyes and your heart?
